The Transect: a diagnostic of how work actually moves

The Transect is EMBR's diagnostic: three to four weeks reading how work actually moves in your business, for one fixed fee. You get your sample and three to five ranked findings, each with a depth in hours per week, a build path and an honest answer on where AI belongs.

Your sample: every layer dated and measured in hours per week. Seven layers, 22 hours. Illustrative.
  1. 01Eight interviews, from the floor to the leadership team, one hour each, where the work happens
  2. 02Two workshops: the process walked end to end, then the findings worked through
  3. 03Two observation sessions, watching the workarounds live
  4. 04A systems map: every tool, and every manual bridge between them
  5. 05Analysis, then an executive readout session

What do you need from us?

Three things. Read-only exports from the systems involved, with no system access required. Your standard operating procedures. And two champions on the floor who can open doors for us.

What do you get at the end?

  • Your sample: every layer of the process, live, dormant or dead, dated and measured in hours per week: your workaround debt, layer by layer
  • Three to five ranked findings, each sized and sequenced
  • Every finding classed honestly: process fix, plain automation, or genuinely AI
  • What the manual work costs a year, in rand, in a table
  • A sequenced path: quick win, then build, then platform

When a finding needs no build at all, we say so.

Can we start with one process?

Yes. The Transect, one process is for a single department head: two weeks, three interviews, one observation session and one process mapped end to end. You get a short memo with the findings and one or two build paths.

How is this different from an AI readiness assessment?

A readiness assessment asks people how ready they are. The Transect watches the work. What we observe outranks system data, and system data outranks what we're told. Where the evidence disagrees, the lower figure wins. How we measure.

Do you need access to our systems?

No. We work from read-only exports. No system access is required.

Tell us what you're working around, and we'll come back to you within two working days.

  1. 01You write two linesWhat you're working around. We read it the same day.
  2. 02A 30-minute callWithin two working days. We ask what the workaround costs you, and say which stage fits.
  3. 03A written scopeFixed fee, what you get, when. Nothing starts until you've signed it.
